1957 Jan 2 by Irene Pfleger Wachdorf to daughter Dolores, detailing surprise visit by son Bunky & family, surprise phone call from Dolores, another from former neighbors Jean & John Folz ("I miss them very much as I could always go there and have a cup of coffee with Jean's mother whenever I felt depressed because she often felt that way too as she has about 8 or 9 sisters + brothers in Chgo that she missed very much too") with massive list of Xmas gifts received, listing all of her kids, Dick & Millie Heagberg, Louise Pfleger, Carrie Baldwin, Geralda Gotsch, etc. Also "memories of when our brood was small and how we enjoyed Xmas morning when we saw the looks on their faces when they first saw the tree and their toys-- it certainly repaid us for all the planning and work we did to make it a perfect Xmas for them." Sent training drinking cup gotten from neighbor.

1957 Jan 26 by Irene Pfleger Wachdorf to daughter Dolores, wondering why no one's written, if maybe grandson J's stitches got infected, "you know boys--didn't almost all of ours have stitches and broken noses--the only thing we didn't have was broken legs or arms," rainy weather keeping her husband from his pruning, doing jigsaw puzzles instead, "crazy golfing" son Larry's routine of getting up early to make reservations, brought golfers home and showed them his color slides of photos of pros from tournament

1957 Feb 21 by Irene Pfleger Wachdorf to daughter Dolores, once again on exploits of son J** who didn't get too much of a scar "but so what, boys are only boys once and they might as well have a time while they are young," got photo of Dolores & family from Art's daughter & even "my chauffeur" (Mary Armstrong) thinks Dolores worryingly thin. List of birthday gifts from Scudders, from Baldwin, etc & Larry bought her a portable TV (made her furious, too much money), his car in need of repairs, neighbor Mr. Kelly working three days to get clogged drain working for them, might repay by giving Ruth Kelly the apron that Aunt Louise gave

1957 Apr 3 Char by Charlotte Plaehn Wachdorf, updating her sister-in-law on the state of Irene Pfleger Wachdorf's health after (apparently) another attack of diverticulitis, on the last minute nature of the trip, on making Irene slow down ("she wants to go go go but of course she gets stomped on"), on Ed Sr enjoying having Char's youngest son around to "bawl out, as he never gets far with your mother and of course Larry will never change."

1957 April 11 by Irene Pfleger Wachdorf to daughter Dolores, on her recuperation with the help of daughter-in-law Charlotte and sister-in-law Louise, the place "a morgue" now that Charlotte's young son has departed, wish others would come out and stay, enjoyed pinochle games and travels with fearless son of Charlotte who would go a mile a minute...

1957 Apr 17 by 3 by three authors--Ed Wachdorf Sr, his wife Irene Pfleger Wachdorf, and her sister-in-law Louise Lift Pfleger out visiting to help Irene over her recent hospitalization after departure of daughter-in-law Charlotte. Recuperating faster, maybe this time will stick to doctor's orders. Having Char's son stay with them meant when Ed planted seeds his grandson thought "they had to be dug up every day for progress, such monkey business. And his mother says, ain't he cute. It was lucky I knew the answer and held my peace. The whole world still has to agree that they are irrepressible and may God love them as well as their doting parents." Tagged on end a bit from Louise Lift Pfleger, widow of Irene's brother Henry, on playing cards with Ed and therefore being always wrong, "Your Dad tells me I'm disintegrating more. I don't know and he doesn't either Holy cow, what else ain't I." Tacked on at end section from Irene herself on getting better, wondering about swollen face of another grandson.

1957 May 17 by Irene Pfleger Wachdorf to daughter Dolores, wishing happy mother's day, enjoying visit by Louise Pfleger and Carrie Baldwin. The latter trying to talk the former into buying a house with her in CA. Went to Redondo with them. "Hope to go to the Arboretum on Sunday to see the peacocks and of course we will have to take a trip to Farmers' Market and have a real nice lunch there which everyone seems to enjoy very much and then to Tijuana Mex and Knotts Bery Farm + maybe Capistrano too"

1957 June 5 by Irene Pfleger Wachdorf to daughter Dolores, telling of departure of Carrie Baldwin and arrival of Mae & Madge Wachdorf (Louise Pfleger still there), happy to hear Les went to Mass with the kiddies, Larry about died laughing reading about grandson pulling up neighbor's tulips; lost 23 pounds due to diverticulitis attack; Louise sewing up a storm.

1957 July 6 short card by Irene Pfleger Wachdorf on daughter moving (I bet you are just thrilled to pieces) and "busier than busy" getting ready for Char & Jerry to come, with Larry trying to do housepainting while working and going to night school.

1957 July 25 by Irene Pleger Wachdorf to daughter Dolores, mentions Dolores' flooded basement and possible new house, ponders Larry's vacation time from work, mentions visit to Calif by Jerry and Char and family that was too short at 8 days  because they drove instead of taking plane or train; Larry painted the house white with Chinese red trim; Bunk & Jinny due to visit with kids including new baby "we haven't had such a small baby here since we moved out here." Alondra Park improved, weather great, and just discovered "Sequoia National Park (where we hit another car)" and says drive up is gorgeous but "dad + I had our fill of mountains so we don't care if we ever go up in the mountains again"

1957 Aug 28 by Irene Pfleger Wachdorf to daughter Dolores, company gone, feeling lonely, especially miss Bunk's daughter M**, coming to Chgo in Oct, on Dolores' new house, offers to loan $200
